Eureka

Eureka Springs is a beautiful, historic town built on the side of the mountain. It is a common travel destination for people around here. I've lived here for 17 years, but I've never been there. Last weekend, that changed.

T and I have a couple with whom we are very close: G & A. They go to Eureka fairly regularly with A's family. We decided to go on an adult's only getaway together last weekend to ES. It was fabulous!!

First of all, the scenery is beautiful. It is so incredible to stand and look way down on the tops of trees, houses, everything. Of course, everything is beautifully green right now. We went to the Crescent Hotel and stood on a balcony and looked down on the grounds, trees, and a beautiful Spanish style Catholic church with a red roof. Christ of the Ozarks is on a mountain across from the hotel, and we had a great view.

We stayed in a hotel downtown called the New Orleans which was built in 1892. The rooms were spacious and very nice. They are decorated a combination of antique and antique looking furniture. The bathrooms have more of the same furniture, pedestal sinks, ornate mirrors, and enormous jacuzzi tubs. The effect is beautiful and comfortable.

The streets are crammed with all kinds of shops: candy stores, knick-knack shops, clothing stores, art galleries. They have it all. The great thing about staying in the hotel was that we were within walking distance from everything. We went into what felt like a million shops, some of them more than once, but I know I still didn't see everything.

Right in the middle of downtown is a big amphitheater. During the day, artists and other various peddlers, set up shop to sell their wares. But in the evening, they clear out. Musicians (who also play some during the day) play music and people gather to listen, dance, and just enjoy the cool after the sun goes down.

I had such a fantastic time enjoying all of those things, but what I enjoyed most was the time alone with friends. We had so much fun just being together. We stayed up late playing games and I laughed until my sides ached. There is something to be said for friends with whom you can completely let down your guard and truly be yourself.

The strangest thing happened on my way home.....

When I was young, we moved to the Denver area. I lived there my entire childhood and on into my teen years. Then we moved back to Tulsa. I don’t know about where you live, but in the wintertime in Colorado it snows. A lot. Tulsa, however, is a much different story.

In Tulsa, we probably get 1 good snow a year, occasionally more, occasionally less. In lieu of snow, we get ice. Everywhere. On everything. Every year. Last year we had a terrible ice storm that crippled most of the city for several days, even longer for some parts.

Oh how I miss the beautiful, fluffy powder that washes the world in white. *sigh* But I digress…

Understanding that we get ice EVERY YEAR, one would suppose that people would learn how to drive on it. (I guess that is just too much to ask.) And that, dear friends, is where my story begins.

Because of the ice, TPS has cancelled classes for the last 2 days. Yesterday afternoon J’s friend called and asked if she could spend the night. We agreed and she did. This evening, Tobey dropped by a friend’s house to borrow some sleds (thank you Jillian!) and then went on to pick J up from the friend’s house. The apartment complex in which the friend lives sits at the top of a short but steep hill. He had to turn off of the main road onto a road that runs beside the complex. When he got to the turn, there was another car in front of him waiting to turn. She couldn’t turn because a minivan had turned onto the hill and gotten stuck. Tobey, Good Samaritan that he is, decided to pass the car in front of him and turn into a parking lot just past the stuck van, which fed back out onto the side street. He parked his car, got out, and went to the van. The driver was a young woman in her early twenties all alone. By the time he reached her, a Suburban had pulled in front of her, and the driver of the suburban, had decided to wrap a chain around her bumper and pull her up the hill.

Tobey assessed the situation and suggested that, instead of pulling her, it might be wise to back the minivan onto the main road, turn around, and go through the parking lot as he had done. Everyone agreed that was a good plan, but the woman begged for Tobey to do the driving. She was scared that she would get stuck again. He agreed and climbed into the driver’s seat while she climbed in the passenger seat. (Mistake #1)

As he climbed in, he noticed 2 things he thought odd: #1. There was a roll of twenties in the door handle. #2. The van smelled not only of cigarette smoke, but some kind of smoke as well…..

He carefully backed the car into the road, drove north until he found a safe place to turn around, passed a police officer, and then headed back toward the parking lot. All the while, the woman talked about how she was so glad her babies weren’t with her, and how scary driving on the ice is. As she talked, he kept hearing a strange buzzing sound. He finally realized it was coming from the roll of twenties in the door handle. He asked the woman if it was her phone and she told him it was.

They finally reached the parking lot. As they pulled in, he noticed a Jeep Cherokee pulling in the opposite end of the lot. The woman leaned forward and said, “I think that’s who I’m here to meet.” Tobey pulled toward our car and the Jeep pulled toward him. As they got closer, he realized there were 5 very large men in the Jeep. (I think at this point, he was officially creeped out.) Each vehicle reached it destination almost simultaneously. Tobey put the van in park, opened the door and got out, just as the driver of the Jeep rolled down the window and reached out toward him and with a low growly voice said, “Here ya go.” He had his hand closed around something, and it was in that moment, Tobey realized that he had just helped a woman get to her dealer. He saw his career flash before his eyes. He quickly stepped back and mumbled something like, “Uh, ok I’ll see you later.” He couldn’t get to the car fast enough. He fled the scene like he was running from the Devil himself.

When he got home, he came into the bathroom, where I was enjoying a hot bath and a good book. He said, “Have I got something to tell you,” and proceeded to relay the entire story. I laughed. Finally free of the tension, he laughed too.

“You know, I should have known something was weird,” he said with a wink, “when she made me wear this hat with a big feather sticking out of the top and called me her Pimp Daddy.” Dork.

Reproductive Confusion

Wow…my last blog was oh-so-cheery. Man, I am super fun.

I am so, so glad there is no school tomorrow. We’re barely back from Christmas break and I already need a break. How pathetic!

Ok right now I’m having a ridiculous struggle. My oldest will be 14 in just a couple of months. My youngest is 8. There is no way I want to have children that far apart, and yet…. Aaaahhh! What’s wrong with me? I have firmly dismissed the idea, had no desire to have any more children for several years. And suddenly, I have 4 pregnant friends. Now I’m feeling that familiar ache, that sad desire to be pregnant again. What the heck is wrong with me? T and I have never had a time in our marriage without children. We treasure time alone with one another. We look forward to the days when we will be free to do as we please. And here I am with this strange desire to be pregnant again. Ugh!

Now, luckily (I think) there is no way on earth (or anywhere else) that Tobey could possibly be convinced that we need another child. And as that makes me happy on one level, I am crushed on another. What the heck? I don’t get it. Being female is the most confusing thing. I'm really sorry fellas. If we can't figure ourselves out, I have no idea how you are supposed to.

After it's all over

I haven’t blogged in so long I think my blog has forgotten who I am. I managed to miss all of the Christmas festivities, the New Year’s celebrations, and the holiday cheer in general. So here I am. And now, all I can think to say is “so.” It’s like one of those awkward pauses in an already awkward conversation. It’s in those instances, though I’m typically shy in uncomfortable or new social situations, I tend to laugh nervously, a little too loudly, or suddenly vomit forth a mass of personal information that I would normally die before saying. Somehow though, in those instances, I can’t seem to stop myself. It’s like I’m outside of my body watching me embarrass myself. And then the more embarrassed I get, the more I tend to say, until my husband is mortified by all of the things I’ve just told someone next to him. Of course I’m equally mortified. But…

Not sure how I got there… Ok, I’m regrouping now.

The holidays were wonderful-- at least the part that wasn’t taken from me by the fire and its aftermath. I had my own little Mary, who looked beautiful beside her Joseph. I was able to give the people on my list things that I wanted to give them. I threw a pretty fun, if last minute New Year’s Eve party. I finally finished hunting for, picking up, washing, sorting, and delivering things for my extended family. In fact, they picked a couch we got for them about 2 weeks ago, and that was the last of it. I’m glad to be done with that stuff. I’m back to teaching the little 1st and 2nd graders on Wednesday nights. I’ve already been to a couple of PTA meetings, planned some class activities and sorted through financial business. I started BSF again and we’ve begun worship practice again (which, by the way, has been the highlight of my weeks). I’ve taken all of my family to the dentist, taken the ones who needed it to get haircuts, paid bills, shopped for groceries, gotten Cox out here to switch us, taken the girls to dance a dozen times…

So here I am in January, halfway through now. Where am I? What am I doing? Nothing. Feeling a little down I guess. I mean, I can’t even think of one thing worth saying on my Facebook page. What’s wrong with me.

I think it’s probably just post-holiday, post-busy-with-the-fire letdown. I don’t know. Oh well, don’t mind me. I don’t have anything enlightening to tell you. Hope you all have some entertaining things on your blogs, because I could use a laugh.
